The coronavirus has certainly thrown our regularly scheduled routines for a loop. The NBA is finally starting to solidify talks about how to finish out the season. Evidently, there have been multiple discussions about creating a World Cup style group stage to complete the rest of the season. The 22 best teams will be divided into tiers of evenly matched pools where they would matchup against each team in their bracket twice (eight total games.) The top two teams from each tier would go onto play in an eight team seven game series format. (The Score)
Home court advantage won’t play a role considering the fact that this proposed tournament will take place in Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, FL.
This international type tournament might prove interesting for teams that discover a new spark from the multi-month long hiatus. (B/R) Some dangerous weapons such as Jusuf Nurkic and Zion Williamson might make quite an impact with all the time they have received to heal from injury.
Regardless, the proposed talks are encouraging for a sports market that has been disparaged for the past few months. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out and if any teams make rebuilding and resurgent efforts in a rejuvenated non-traditional playoff fashion.
