Sloppy Joes with and Asian Twist

Updated: Jul 22, 2020

Just as they say about chicken, there are so many ways to prepare ground meat. It is a staple in my home, and I have come up with several ways to make it. One of those ways has always been Sloppy Joes. I’ve used the canned sauces and have also made the traditional sauce myself. As a firm believer in “use what you got”, I came up with a different spin on the usual ketchup/tomato paste sauce that I know you and yours will enjoy.

Ingredients:

1 lb. package of ground turkey (beef, chicken, or pork)

1 medium yellow onion

2 tablespoons minced garlic

1-2 tablespoons butter

½ cup Sweet Baby Ray’s Honey Teriyaki Sauce & Marinade

¼ cup Kraft Hickory Smoke Barbecue Sauce

1 8oz can of tomato sauce

2 tbs. Soy Sauce

2 tsp. fish sauce (optional)

Montreal Steak Seasoning (to taste)

Red Pepper Flakes (to taste)

Start by chopping onions and placing them in the pan with the butter and minced garlic. (Some bell pepper would also be a great addition.) Caramelize and set aside.

Next, brown the ground meat and add dry seasonings.

Once brown, add the caramelized onion/garlic mixture back into the pan along with the remaining (wet) ingredients.

Stir and bring to a simmer, about 5 minutes on medium heat (if you would like to thicken the sauce add a flour/cornstarch and water mixture a little at a time until desired consistency), and that’s it!

I put ours on a toasted hamburger roll drizzled with a little olive oil and a sprinkle of shredded cheddar. You can also serve it in a wrap, as a patty melt, over rice, or in lettuce wraps. Quick, easy, and versatile! Serve with a side salad and dinner is done.
